Green Italy | Umbria Wonders

“Americans who visit Umbria love the landscape: the silvery olive groves, the fields of sunflowers, the vineyards, the stone houses and barns.” - Anthony Lewis

Welcome to Umbria!

Located in the heart of Italy, between Romeand Florence, Umbria is one of Italy’s most renowned regions for natural beauty, historical heritage and artistic patrimony. Two natural lakes, Lake Trasimeno north of Perugia and Lake Piediluco near Terni and a man-made one, Lake Corbara between Todi and Orvieto, the Castelluccio plain(photo) and ample green valleys amidst the Appennini east of the region.

Cities you will visit

  • Rome, Heart of Italy: the Caput Mundi. Fragments of the past remain here with the ruins of an Empire, the names of the streets, the beauty of Palazzi, Piazze, and the fountains, that will offer endless reasons to visit it mutliple times.

  • Vatican City, and Vatican Museums with the chance to admire Michelangelo’s masterpiece: the Sistine Chapel. Visit a special area of the Museum - the Bramante staircase: in the Pio-Clementine Museum, it was built in 1505 with a double helix design by Donato Bramante, something its contemporaries had obviously never seen before. It was built to allow Pope Julius II to enter his private residence while still in his carriage, since walking up in heavy papal vestments would have been onerous.

  • Perugia, The capital city of Umbria is the largest city with a history dating back to ancient Etruscan foundations, home of one of Europe's oldest universities and of the Umbria Jazz Festival, the most important festival in Italy

  • Assisi, the birthplace of St.Francesco, and discover its undisputed highlights: UNESCO World Heritage, the massive 13th century Basilica of St. Francis, and frescoes of respected medieval painters including Giotto and Cimabue.

  • Castiglione del Lago, listed as one of the best "Borghi D'Italia", thanks to its ancient, naturalistic, and cultural patrimony dating back to Etruscan times,

  • Orvieto, and a visit to its Dome, which is maybe the most famous church in central Italy. Here you can see paintings, mosaics, sculptures, and frescoes created by Luca Signorelli

  • Marmore Falls, he tallest man-made waterfall in the world, created in antiquity by the ancient Romans. The falls pour into the valley formed by the river Nera, an environment extraordinarily rich in cultural, historical, and naturalistic heritage.
